TO SEEK A YOUNGER WORLD
...Reflecting on the state of union: war in Middle East, the BP Gulf of Mexico oil leak and melted chocolate-looking oil on Southern beaches, Texas's weak environmental regulations, contaminated and drained-by-drillers aquifers in Texas, radioactive waste coming to Tx from all over the us, TCE in Grand Prairie underground plumes encroaching on homes....the list is long.
Human beings have lived on earth MILLIONS of years. But, in my lifetime or in say, the past sixty years or the baby boomers' lifespan, we have managed to ruin much our groundwater and underground hydrological system with industrial "progress" and war.
When else in history did the free world have to fight to the death so often for her way of life with advanced technological weapons, aircraft, and missiles? Not to mention the nuclear component...Totally unprecedented.
We have literally had to fight for our way of life and freedom during the past half century-or at least we thought we had to; and I don't disagree that we did what we had to do.
Will nuclear arms ever be laid down or given up? Will the US continue to use weapons of depleted uranium which destroy the homeland of the enemy and cause cancer in our own soldiers? Seems we are using these weapons (which I believe should be outlawed) when our existence may not be at stake, but our oil is or was.
I'm thinking we will only renew our planet and our international relationships when we renew the way we think about war, humanity, ourselves. Oh yes, and our energy needs!
Some say it's too late. Too much is at stake and the rest of the world can't be trusted.
Things are too far gone, too toxic-and that may be true.
Robert Kennedy said - in effect - prior to being murdered: It's never too late to seek a younger, newer world.
His son, RFK, Jr, says we need a cleaner world.
Maybe the two ideas go together-peace and the rebuilding/restoring of the earth.
Perhaps nations will come together one day to save our water, soil and air. Oh, "save the planet" reads like a hippie T-shirt, but where there are hippies, there's usually a good bit of truth!
When we've suffered enough in all the ways people suffer-physically as a planet, spiritually as an isolated people, economically as a nation consuming itself with debt, politically as politicians fund favorite projects with tax money while people and families go without jobs- we'll take a hard look at this.
