The oil spill in the Gulf has done something remarkable-something ranting, protesting, or educating could not do. It has shown the world how dangerous drilling for oil and gas can be, and it has shown how anxious for quick profit oil companies are.
Now the oil companies may protest, but it seems to me we have the facts through the testimony of these companies' own employees. Other employees are dead, the Gulf coast has lost its fishing industry, tourism, and relative environmental cleanliness and safety of beaches; wildlife and ecosystems are dying-choked of air and water-even food. All for a few million.
Lives and life risked and lost for a few, fast bucks.
This is a lesson that isn't quickly over and forgotten-it bleeds before our eyes, captured for all the world on the world wide web.
Terrorists don't have to come for us right now; our own greed is doing the job.
Pres. Obama is correct that this situation is ENRAGING. Or perhaps we should leave that word for young widows who lost husbands on the drilling platform.
What good is rage? Well, for one thing, it is an unparalleled teacher and guide through future murky water where tough decisions about energy must be made.
Rage and even fear take us places we don't want to go; but we need to go there to learn to be better citizens-citizens who can hold greedy corporations accountable for their actions.
The few people who made the decision to ignore complete safety procedures acted out true corporate philosophy, which they knew well. You just can't blame a disaster like this on a few individuals, in my book. We all know what the boss expects us to do.
So, there's a lesson for humanity on the Gulf ocean floor. ...A drama which may prove to be ongoing hell for BP.
Sorry so many others must go there too, through no fault of their own.
