POLK ST Area-Cancer Information Sought
Lately, I have been researching water wells in and around Oak Cliff to discover reasons for OC's high (double the state) cancer rate. Goodness-we OC kids were encircled by toxic industry: the Dixie Paper Co, Dresser Ind., RSR smelter, Cement City and Lone Star Cement, manufacturing and repair of all types-roof, paint, auto,
oil and gas drilling equipment; then, of course, the aircraft and missile industries and military were at Mt Creek Lake. Even our utilities like Lone Star Gas and TXU are now or were Superfund sites.
As if that isn't enough, I found ASBESTOS SITES: schools, churches, county buildings-even the Sears headquarters my grandfather worked in for 40 years contained asbestos!
What can one say except that, as a people, our ability to build and create exceeded our ability or desire to clean up.
When I look around my house, I think sometimes I have the same problem; but at least I'm not emitting dioxins or radioactive metals.
If you lived in the Dixie paper plant area (Polk St region-Vernon, Tyler Sts...) and know of someone who developed cancer at a young age or any age, or someone whose child was born with birth defects;
please e-mail me at raking26@yahoo.com.
While my research is in the early stages, I see chemicals from a paper/plastics plant having been released into the air over many decades (PVC, dioxins from plastics; also ink and solvents have been mentioned in public reports; and possible dumping in an Oklahoma Superfund site).*
Another factor to consider: I personally know of several people who suffered extremely ill effects. In fact, none of these folks are currently living.
Could be a co-incidence, but I feel there's a strong reason to understand the OC environment back in the 50s-80s particularly. Interesting and worrisome-from both a personal and historical perspective, don't you think? THANKS!
*If you wonder why we're talking about dioxins now, fifty years after the fact...remember recent studies, including ones that followed Viet Nam veterans exposed to "agent orange" have revealed more info on chemicals and respiratory, gastro and liver cancer than we could have ever imagined back in the day. Perhaps now is the time to put these pieces together for Oak Cliff residents and families who have lost loved ones.
