Volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, industrial waste, sanitary sewage dumped into Mountain Creek Lake; contaminated groundwater seeping from under the Dallas Naval Air Station into the west lagoon, chemicals drained into storm run-off places, chemicals drained into both the east and west lagoons, a formula with co-efficients proving (?) how much liquid/chemical solution from the DNAS has "flowed" into the lake ...You'll find all this and more in an online document from 2003.
The title: Watershed Contaminated Source Document-Mt Creek Lake-2003; WatershedContaminationSourceDOCDallas030503. (To find this, I had to Google "Mountain Creek Lake"+watershed contaminated source...).
What is the staus of this lake and its sediment today? A report is due in 2009, and citizens need to know what it says and means. Surely all wonder how long it will take for this lake to be fixed. The 2003 report (cited above) says a contaminated plume has been capped (and run-off collected) at the Naval Air Station, while other contaminated plumes at other "industrial sources" may still cause problems. Thus, some of us fear the lake, while somewhat improved as that report suggests, can't be fixed at all . TCEQ states the fishing ban may be lifted in 15 years; but I've read the lake will endure "natural attenuation" - nature's free remedy - and monitoring for 50 years. As you ponder this, don't forget to factor in reliable scientists' contention that cancer-causing PCBs never completely go away-just dilute, migrate in flooding, enter the food chain, etc.
So, let's ask ourselves: Do we have a problem? Do we have a problem that time and sunshine can remedy for free? Does that make sense? And one more thing: If MCL is permanently harmed,
shouldn't citizens be a part of discussions about its future?
