About the Gulf oil spill....You know, if I had my way we would find ways of using clean, renewable energy and energy sources. Solar, wind, energy from ocean waves are "the way to go" and the way we will go eventually, I believe, as we improve technology and lower start up costs.
But as long as we choose to depend on oil, we may have to learn to drill safely in deep water.
When the Haiti earthquake happened last spring, I got it in my head that the UN was in Haiti protecting valuable mineral resources that could have been ravaged after the earthquake. And I learned along the way that the Haitian harbors and areas farther out in the sea were rich with oil. Port au Prince could become a wonderful port for the US military, I read, and refueling ship would be cheap and convenient if refined oil was available in mass quantities.
Problem is getting oil from beneath the ocean foor in deep water is just too expensive-and, now we know, complicated and risky (not to mention the refinery problem)
I've said all that to say this: I understand why BP was drilling in deep water, and see that, in a way, they had to learn to do this efficiently; not just for profit but for British and American national security. Other companies were learning to claim the hydrocarbons from the sea floor, and the US and friends needed to be able to access oil from our friendly Gulf and even Caribbean waters.
What none of us understands is why BP was not absolutely prepared for emergency, following religiously every safety rule in the book. Did they think the gods would somehow protect them from themselves?
I think there is a Greek or British myth in here somewhere...Egotists defy the power of nature and trust in own pitful, flawed ability. (...Not trusting in the US Navy, foreign governments who claim to know how to solve the crisis, individuals like Kevin Costner and Red Adair with ingenious equipment and proven experience.)
As BP remains "in control" and our President allows this, trouble gets worse and lasts longer. In the end, BP may not lose as much as the Gulf coast.
Totally unfair.
This is one of the few times in my long life "experts" have not known how serious or devastating a NATIONAL EMERGENCY will be. Comforting?
