Just read a post by Mara on the Dallas Morning News Oak Cliff blog site in comments on Mountain Creek Lake. Mara and her children live in a new home on the lake and have become very ill since residing there. Breathing difficulty, constant coughing, spitting up blood, nodules in throat and lung, enlarged lung, neurological problems are major complaints. All three in the family are affected-mom and two children.
OK...we're not too surprised...Mara's housing area is close to or atop a TCE plume flowing toward the Naval Weapons Facility (The Navy denies causing the plume). Her lake contains PCBs, metals, and worse. Steam from the neighboring power plant drives chemicals from the lake into the air. Air quality is not measured at the lake, and the lake itself has been given over to "natural attenuation"-no clean up because the problem is quite vast and too expensive to fix. Nature will be able to "cure" all these chemicals in only a hundred years; good news - maybe seventy!
Texas law allowed the building of her subdivision; and I'm confident she was not warned of the lake's contamination by the US Navy.
Is anyone else in this area suffering similar illnesses?
Neighbors need to band together, collect info, and notify the builder, the cities of Dallas and Grand Prairie, EPA, etc.
While the contamination of the Naval facilities area was my first thought, the problem could be indoor air quality from features of the home itself.
Already-soon after posting-I've heard from an expert that Mara's illnesses do not warrant testing for TCE. However, testing may be requested - with maximum politeness, I'm sure!
This should not be taken to mean that regulators would test.
SO, what does it take to warrant a test? More time and more people getting sick?
My bottom line concern is that we just don't know what hazardous waste could have been dumped around the Naval facilities or what building materials were used in the neighboring subdivision.
Taxpayers, this is a time when public money needs to be spent to safeguard citizens and their absolutely helpless children living in worrisome conditions.
Helpful experts have weighed in on Mara's problems. EPA affirms that building materials from other countries must be considered as a possible culprit. Think Chinese drywall and the like....Also, houses causing respiratory ailments should be tested for radon gas-a product of decaying uranium, which can enter homes from the soil, water supply, or even through certain kinds of dangerous drywall. Radon testing is easy to do and is inexpensive - even free. EPA can help and publishes guidelines on its website. Thanks, EPA!
