If I had my life to live over again, I would be a scientist. Technology has opened up the field - the world - into a palette of beauty and fascination we never knew existed back in the day of Sunset High School-circa 1969! O, maybe some brain - trust people knew, but I was far too immature to envision what might lie beyond the never-ending, sleep-inducing textbook and black and white movie reels on insects. (Really-I spent one hour of my precious life watching "Flies Are Interesting" in the "projection room.")
Time traveling to the present, science is the answer to economic and environmental problems-and probably political ones, too. As JFK said when advocating peace and unity among citizens of the world, "We are all mortal..." and to continue his message in paraphrase, we all want the same things in life for ourselves and our children. I would add: we want affordable energy for a comfortable home and necessary travel, affordable medical care, clean water and air without the loss of jobs or "crippling of a sector." The key is "affordable" and science is key in making that miracle a reality. Many can find energy, but who can produce it safely and at a desirable price?
Isn't it funny how our society allows athletes, movie stars, politicians, and even tv preachers to be paid millions per season/gig/board assignment, when we need to be paying scientists the big bucks to solve our problems.
Happy viewing of beauty in the natural world... and hopefully thinking about what you can do change the world and make it a safe haven for the fragile human family. Oh, and happy Valentines Day!
