THE MOUNTAIN CREEK LAKE QUESTION

A decade after it was profoundly contaminated, one wonders what can be done with Mt Creek Lake. Could it offer more than a place to cool power company equipment? Do citizens even have the right to dream of using it for recreation in this century? How dangerous is it? (PCBs, a huge problem in the lake, dilute -but stay with us - changing forms, volatizing into the air, remaining in fish and the food chain, in water and air - moving through the environment with wind, storms, and floods; causing cancer.) To me, the big question now is WHAT KIND OF CLEAN UP HAS BEEN AND WILL BE DONE? What quality? To what degree or standard? Sometimes when spills and dumping are widespread, we shrug our shoulders, spend a little money when we have to, then pray the stuff goes away over time. We go back and monitor the mess every year, but time doesn't heal all wounds. So I must ask - what was the partial MCL clean up like? (very important aspects are yet to be completed) If canisters of fuel were dug up, where are they? How do we know they've all been removed? As citizens, we have a right to know exactly what was done and ; WE HAVE THE RIGHT to work with professionals in overseeing the future clean up endeavors at Mountain Creek Lake. From my reading, groundwater is still contaminated. Do you think citizens should be involved? I do. Just tell me when and where to show up. Write it in the "federal registry" with the 30 day notice, and for heaven's sake, tell me where the registry/notice is! Citizens, we need to organize a community oversight group -fast! If we had a group we could formally ask questions, receive answers, and perhaps get a grant to retain an environmental/legal professional to facilitate acceptable progress.
