MAN UP AND CLEAN UP

A little news on the Dallas Air Station and NWIRP: Vought operating in the Grand Prairie NWIRP facility has been acquired by Triumph Corp, according to the Dallas Morning News. This could be a very good thing for local workers, although their official future is presently uncertain. Triumph could consolidate operations or assign more work to the GP plant, or even buy NWIRP, as the Navy would like to sell it.

A talk with an EPA manager yesterday revealed that he has interest in more vapor testing above TCE plumes at the Naval Air Station/NWIRP and perhaps over other plumes in Grand Prairie. I was under the impression EPA was satisfied with the status quo, and am happy to see EPA try more aggressive responses to contamination. The problem is Texas law, which requires no vapor testing at all-even when plumes are only twenty feet below the surface and vapor can rise and affect homes and offices.
So if you have occasion to advocate clean up for this area, remember VAPOR TESTING over TCE plumes.
To get a better picture of things: The Navy as well as many other Grand Prairie industries dumped chemical waste in multiple GP locations for many years. Proving who dumped what...where...proves impossible, as the polluters knew it would. It's easy to pass the buck and dodge responsibility, as polluters can say it's always "possible" an enterprise no longer in business did the dirty work-even when no records of such a business exist. (Give me a break with this logic.)
Wouldn't it be refreshing if the Navy or Vought manned up and said they'd fully clean up behind their own facility, in their own woods and "bay?"
Liability issues are major tests of character, aren't they?
