Some Take the Money...And Run!

Blogging has been one small thing I can do to raise awareness of environmental problems in my city and state. I've learned about toxic military bases in other US states and have watched experts in the environmental science field sort out problems they didn't create; and I've watched politicians try to both help and thwart solutions.
All in all - working to better the environment is one TOUGH BUSINESS!
I have a background in education. When we find a special student need, we spend money on materials and staff, and do a thorough job helping the student find the highest level of success possible. When things fall into place as they should, we generally enjoy support from the community.
Educational standards backed by the law and a solid district are tight. That's a good thing, I believe, providing educators with society's resources with which to follow sound procedure.
But with the environment...what a different story! The government and even many citizens in Texas have the attitude: don't test air and water, don't spend money, don't rock the boat or mess with my job or the wonderful economy-though professionals KNOW citizens are in danger of lung and neurological diseases, cancer, and many have ruined property from lucrative and, yes, necessary processes like gas and oil drilling.
If an environmental scientist/crusader persists-saying basically: Wake up. Our capitalistic/business-oriented society is-rather than cleaning up toxic chemical waste - TRYING TO PROFIT FROM unethical or at least questionable business practices that continue to cause disease risk and a chaotic chemical mess...Well, a mud-slinging contest results as people call one another obsessed crazies and criminals! Does the law intervene to calm the waters and point to mandatory action in the public interest?
There has got to be a better way than present conflict!
Personally, I think we need to support EPA and even encourage the federal office to set and force compliance with tougher safety standards. If this hurts the economy short-term, at least we will be forced to solve long-term energy and land use problems, which must be addressed (the sooner the better).
Please, no insulting of people who are trying to do a complete job that reaches down to fix the core of a problem; and let's be part of the authentic change-our-world-solution-with strong laws, adequate funding, and a mind-set that faces reality rather than slings mud and runs away with what profit our mutual land can yield.
When we as a society run from the question of morality in remediation/restitution, we run from the very things that will in the end overcome us. It's a Bible thing-to know what is wrong, yet do it...or to know what is right and NOT do it, is sin.
Just a thought for the day that has guided my struggling life for a long time.
At the heart of most human troubles is the right/wrong test and it isn't only answered in "parts per billion." PPB doesn't mean a lot when no one knows how many ppbs are safe.
