Tonight...a truth from St. Bernard of Clairvaux:
To seek knowledge for knowledge's sake, that is curiousity.
To seek knowledge to impress others, that is vanity.
But to seek knowledge in order to serve others...That is love.
I hope those of us with knowledge and an opportunity to share knowledge for the common good-will. Helping our fellow man is the one thing that makes years of difficult study and work experience worthwhile. But, it takes courage to speak truth to power, to swim against the tide of financial interest, and speak for those who don't yet know how to or can't speak for themselves.
As a smart, courageous friend recently said, " Today we (citizens) are the investigative reporters and the media. If we don't speak out, some things that are hidden won't come to light."
Information and the ability to contact one another is literally at our fingertips on our keyboards. How will we use what we know to implore the powerful to protect the relatively powerless in our society?
