GO FISH - IN MOUNTAIN CREEK LAKE?

If you GOOGLE Mountain Creek Lake, you'll find all kinds of unique things -water contamination reports, crimes, wrecks, and suicide attempt accounts, this blog; but one of my favorites is the fishermen discussion boards. I like them because I can tell these guys are planning their fishing week-end-night after night online - and are just dying to get out on the water! Granted discussion boards aren't exactly research paper worthy, but as a woman who spent every childhood summer with my grandfather on a Texas lake, I've found Texas men looking for a good place to fish to be quite reliable. Basically, these friendly fellows with their fisherman lore say Mountain Creek Lake has a thick silt bottom and is only 2 ft deep in most places; and has so much "junk" and chemicals in it, you can practically walk on water- or walk across the lake. What an image! Some parts are 18 feet deep, so don't jump in if you can't swim! Further, the fishermen say if you go out in a boat, you get to navigate around a Tomcat airplane wing sticking up like an iceberg. So, be careful! Apparently, some large fish are within the pond, since few people fish in the deep coves that are hard to reach by foot or boat; but remember the fishing ban due to mercury and PCBs. Radioactive Cesium 137 was left off the ban memo, yet I personally find it memorable and a compelling reason not to partake of the catch. If you fish, practice catch and release; and as the fishermen warn, park an old clunker nobody will steal! One guy remarked that his wife drops him off to go fishing then picks him up to protect his car! Pretty sad.
Oh, I love Oak Cliff-land of my birth; home of my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents; and it breaks my heart to have to write about crime and poison. So two positive things in closing: Everything I ever really needed to know about the modern world, including Mountain Creek Lake, I learned using GOOGLE. You can learn all I've discovered and more. And, if we all enjoyed and revered God's creation like Texas fishermen, the world would be a very different place. The things we love: healthy family members, good food, nature and exercise depend on clean water and soil. When I hear that Dallas can't clean up, I think, "If Mountain Creek Lake were at Camp David or in the middle of Central Park or even Highland Park, it would make our heads spin to see how fast it would be cleaned up-or be gone!" It's all about economics and class, dear readers.
